Wellness Tourism

The World Health Organization defines wellness as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices towards a healthy and fulfilling life. It is more than being free from illness, it is a dynamic process of change and growth. A good or satisfactory condition of existence; a state characterized by health, happiness, and prosperity; welfare.

Both millennials and the older generations are actively and consciously participating in taking care of their health and overall wellbeing. The tourism industry seems to have taken note of this with wellness tourism. I LOVE TO SEE IT!

With ordinary travel, people book themselves in hotels, indulge in all sorts of food because they are “on holiday”, take part in hotel activities and leave probably more tired than they went due to constant activity and/or sleeping. Wellness travel on the other hand intentionally focuses on rest and relaxation; most times (but not restricted to) in the form of wellness retreats.

The main goal of wellness retreats is to maintain, enhance/kickstart a healthy lifestyle and support/increase one’s sense of wellbeing. This is done by having a carefully curated menu with healthy food options, relaxing fitness activities e.g. yoga, mindful activities e.g. meditation, self discovery activities, scheduled spa times, detoxes e.g. social media, technology etc. Most times, the wellness retreats are by the beach or in nature. This is because the presence of nature is known to be calming.

In a world where we’re often lost in work, taking care of families, the internet, living up to society’s standards and expectations, we forget what really matters which is our general well-being and taking care of ourselves. Frequently taking wellness retreats results in gaining peace of mind, reclaiming work-life balance and jumpstarting a healthier, happier and more fulfilling way of living.

As you go through life, grow through it.
